Accessibility

We want this shop to be usable by everybody who needs the kit on it, including people using a screen reader, a keyboard alone, magnification, or a phone in poor light with cold hands.

The standard we work to

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2 at level AA across every page of the shop.

That is a target rather than a certification. We are not claiming full conformance, because we have not had the site independently audited. This page says what we do, what we have checked, and what we already know falls short — which is more use to you than a badge.

How we test

  • Every colour in the palette is checked by an automated test against the WCAG contrast thresholds, on each background it is used on. A colour that fails cannot be merged.
  • Automated accessibility checks run against the shop's page templates on every deployment, and any serious or critical issue stops the release.
  • Layout and target sizes are measured on a desktop width and a phone width, against the 24 by 24 pixel minimum in WCAG 2.2.
  • Keyboard journeys — searching, filtering, choosing a size, adding to the basket and checking out — are driven end to end by an automated browser on every change.

What we know is not right yet

Being specific is more honest than a general apology, so:

  • A full manual audit has not been done. Automated tools catch a useful fraction of accessibility problems and miss the ones that need judgement. A manual keyboard and screen-reader pass by a person is planned and has not happened.
  • The documents we generate are not tagged. Invoices, statements and the returns cancellation form are produced as plain PDFs without a tagged reading order, so a screen reader will read them poorly. If you need any of them in another format, ask and we will send it.
  • The card payment fields are not ours. They are supplied by our payment provider and rendered inside their own frame, so we cannot change their markup or their labels.
  • Product photographs carry generated alternative text. The description comes from the product's own name rather than from somebody describing the picture, so it tells you which garment it is and not what it looks like.

Telling us about a problem

If something on this site stops you doing what you came to do, please tell us — it is the fastest way for us to find out. Use the contact form or email us, and say which page you were on and what happened. We will reply, and we will tell you honestly whether we can fix it and roughly when.

If you need something from the site and cannot get at it — a price, a specification, a document — tell us and we will send it to you directly rather than making you wait for a fix.

Your rights

The Equality Act 2010 requires us to make reasonable adjustments so that disabled people are not put at a substantial disadvantage. If you think we have not, we would rather hear it from you than not hear it at all.

We use a few cookies to run the shop — your basket, your VAT preference and the checkout. We would also like to count page views so we can see what is worth fixing. That part is up to you.
